Guneswar Muchahary (1947-2020)

Guneswar Muchahary was an Indian Bodo Sahitya Akademi Award winning poet, critic and academic. He is remembered for his literary contributions to Bodo literature. He published many books in Bodo language including Ha Fisha Houwa (1981), Ferenga Dau (1983), Thunlai Bijirnai (1993), Japani Khonthai (2007), Daina (2008), Thunlai Bidya Arw Gohena (2008), Thunlai Saorai Bihung (2008), Boro Khonthai (2010), Mwndangthi (2010), Bandi (2012) etc.

He was born on 18th January 1947 to Angaram Muchahary and Manashri Muchahary at Ballamguri village of Gosaigaon sub-division in Kokrajhar district. He started his early education from Malaguri MV School. He passed his matriculation examination from Gosaigaon Higher Secondary School in 1965. In 1970, he completed his Bachelor of Arts in 1970 from Kokrajhar Govt. College with Assamese honours. In 1974, he passed his BT Degree from Kokrajhar Govt. CTE Kokrajhar. In 1987, he passed double Bachelor of Arts with Bodo honours from Gosaigaon College. He passed his Masters’ Degree in 1988 from Gauhati University.

As a assistant teacher he started his jobs from Gosaigaon Higher Secondary School (1970), he was the lecturer of Gosaigaon College from 1988 to 1993. Later he was the lecturer of DIET, Kokrajhar from 1990 to till his retired in 2006.

He was awarded Someswari Brahma Literary Award in 2010 for his short story book Daina from Bodo Sahitya Sabha. He awarded prestigious Sahitya Akademi in 2012 for his poetry book Boro Khonthai from the Government of India. In 2010, he got Literary Pension from the Government of Assam. In 2015, he was awarded Promod Chandra Brahma Literary Award from the government of Bodoland Territorial Council.

Muchahary was the founder secretary and founder principal of Gosaigaon B. Ed College, Kokrajhar. He breathed his last on 16th July 2020 at around 10 P.M.
